David W. Newell, M.D.
Neurosurgeon
Dr. Newell is executive co-director and medical director of the
Seattle Neuroscience Institute at Swedish Medical Center. He was
previously professor of neurological surgery at the University of
Washington School of Medicine. In addition to directing the
university's Cerebrovascular Lab, he was chief of neurosurgery at
Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was the founder and
administrative director of the Stroke Center at the University of
Washington.
Dr. Newell focuses primarily on surgical treatments of the
cerebrovascular system, with special expertise in cerebral aneurysms,
arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, extracranial to
intracranial bypass procedures and carotid and vertebral artery
surgery. He also has special interests in trauma of the nervous
system, complex brain tumors, spine instrumentation, minimally
invasive spine surgery and Arnold Chiari malformations. Dr. Newell's
current research investigates cerebrovascular control mechanisms,
including cerebral autoregulation and non-invasive estimation of
intracranial pressure using Transcranial Doppler, which analyzes
blood flow in the brain. His basic science research interests include
mechanisms of neuronal tissue damage during ischemia (condition in
which the blood flow is restricted to a part of the body), anoxia
(absence of oxygen supply to an organ or a tissue) and hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar) evaluated by hippocampal slice cultures.
Dr. Newell received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve
University in 1982 and completed an eight-year residency-training
program in neurosurgery at the University of Washington. He completed
one year as a senior registrar at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital in
London. He also completed a one-year research fellowship in
cerebrovascular blood flow regulation in Bern, Switzerland. He was
appointed to the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery at
the University of Washington in 1990. He has authored or co-authored
over 170 publications and book chapters and five books.
